About Shrimp Welfare Project

Shrimp Welfare Project is an organisation in the Effective Altruism space. Effective Altruism (EA) and the idea that sentient beings deserve consideration are the core values that our team shares. EA is a philosophical and social movement that advocates the use of evidence and reasoning to determine the most effective ways to benefit others. Learn more at effectivealtruism.org – it’s really important for us!

Our mission is to improve the welfare of billions of shrimps, in the most cost-effective way possible. To achieve this, we have a three-pronged strategy:

  • Demand-side: reaching out to relevant stakeholders (such as seafood importers in Europe and the USA) to commit to sourcing their shrimps from producers that fulfil certain higher welfare standards.
  • Supply-side: work with producers in India, Vietnam and Honduras to help them address a number of issues related to shrimp farming, including but not limited to water quality.
  • Outreach: In addition to our supply- and demand-side work, we aim to increase the awareness of shrimp welfare as a cause area by participating in relevant conferences and webinars.  We also hope to assist in research work relating to the welfare of shrimps.

In the medium term, we aim to transition consumption towards a (today inexistent) market for higher-welfare shrimps.

How you will make a difference

We are looking for a detail-oriented and natural relationship builder who is excited to develop and cultivate impactful and reciprocal partnerships with influential individuals to support improving the welfare of farmed shrimps.

As the Head of Programmes, you will work as and with “Corporate Outreach” on the demand-side, and also will be connected with the supply-side by working closely with our in-country coordinators, who will also be reporting to you. Your role will include the following:

  1. Relationship Building: You will be expected to cultivate positive working relationships with shrimp producers, industry associations, and key executives at food companies and attend in-person conferences and networking opportunities as needed.
  2. Partnership: Work closely with our Chief Executive Officer, Corporate Outreach and Country Coordinators to foster solid relationships between SWP and other professionals in the supply and demand side.
  3. Collaboration: You will work with the SWP team to advance the organisation’s strategic objectives.
  4. Support: Assist in serving as a SWP spokesperson at in-person events, including industry gatherings and press conferences, as needed.

What we need

  • Experience in campaigning, issue advocacy, preferably in a corporate environment, sales, or related areas, preferably at a multinational or global level.
  • Passion for SWP’s mission.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal English communication skills.
  • Collaborative, culturally-sensitive, and a champion of global mindedness.
  • Exceptional level of attention to detail and organisation.
  • Ability to prioritise and be proactive.
  • Commitment to being a team player with a growth mindset who is comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, and is adept at finding common ground with parties with whom you may disagree.
  • Requires a bit of “get-up-and-go” with the willingness to embrace a start-up lifestyle (i.e. attending conferences and travelling to meet stakeholders).

We are open to candidates who may be stronger in some areas while still developing in others.  We understand that applying for a new position takes effort and want to thank you in advance for taking the time to introduce yourself.  We can’t wait to meet you!

What would be a plus to have

  • Relevant management experience.
  • Interest in expanding existing knowledge on shrimp welfare.
  • Knowledge of and alignment with the core values of Effective Altruism.
  • Fluent knowledge of Spanish, Dutch or German is an asset, but not a requirement.
  • Being located in Europe due to travel needs.

Benefits of working at SWP

  • You will improve the lives of billions of animals.
  • Raise a greater awareness of the importance of improving shrimp welfare.
  • Be part of a highly skilled, driven and diverse team of passionate individuals from all over the world.
  • Gain experience building and scaling a highly effective non-profit in a startup environment.
  • You will have a significant influence on the direction of the organisation as a whole.
  • Gain access to a community of EA-focused individuals.
