Rethink Priorities is a think tank dedicated to figuring out the best ways to make the world a better place. We do research, mainly on improving the welfare and lives of nonhuman animals. Rather than just doing what feels right, we use evidence and careful analysis to find the very best causes to work on.

We are seeking a full-time talented Director of Operations to take our organization to the next level. You’d be the CEO of making sure our organization runs smoothly and will take a direct role in implementing and overseeing nearly all non-research functions.

What you would do in this role

  • Help hire for and manage an operations team
  • Oversee payroll and reimbursements
  • Oversee HR functions
  • Work with co-Executive Directors to maintain the happiness and well-being of the team
  • Work with co-Executive Directors on fundraising
  • Serve as a liaison between professional services (i.e., accountants, lawyers) and the co-Executive Directors
  • Oversee the development of a budget and tracking of incoming grants and donations
  • Ensure we meet all relevant grant commitments
  • Handle organizational banking and tax needs as necessary
  • Ensure all laws and regulations in all countries RP is in (employees, and as a nonprofit) are followed
  • Help file paperwork to create/maintain organization
  • Manage travel and accommodations for staff
  • Manage file storage and maintain good, organized records
  • Spearhead optimization research to ensure the organization is constantly evaluating best-options for software, infrastructure, etc.

What we need from you

  • 2+ years of prior experience in operations, accounting, legal, and/or HR at a non-profit
  • Experience with GAAP
  • Comfort with independent work and being self-directed
  • Able to consistently work 40 hours a week (though flexibility and vacation time are provided)
  • US work authorization and US residence
  • Ability to research operations and legal questions with high reliability and accuracy
  • Prior experience in people management

What would be nice to have (but not required)

  • Prior experience doing some to most of “What you would do in this role” in a previous non-profit
  • Familiarity with Quickbooks (ideally), but also Xero, Sage, or Quicken
  • Familiarity with non-profit laws and compliance
  • We are very open to remote candidates, but we will give a slight preference to people who live or are willing to relocate to Chicago. We’d cover all reasonable relocation expenses up to $5K.

What we offer you

  • Opportunity to have a large impact, leveraging the work of a growing team of talented researchers.
  • Salary of $56,000 – $65,000 a year, depending on experience and other factors. We set salary according to a fair and transparent algorithm and fully commit to equally paying for equal work, regardless of your background, negotiation skills, etc.
  • Healthcare benefits, through comprehensive insurance or reimbursement for expenses
  • We will trust you as a professional and we will not try to “backseat drive” or do too much to second guess your decisions
  • Very low bureaucracy (in fact, if you take this role, nearly all bureaucracy will be of your own creation!)
  • Flexible work hours (work on your own schedule as long as you show results and communicate well)
  • 6 months fully paid parental leave and lots of paid vacation time
  • If you want more benefits, well you’d basically be in charge of benefit policy so you could easily make suggestions.
  • A caring team that looks out for each other, has a lot of fun, and values having a healthy life outside of work.
  • We don’t provide snacks but we could mail you a box of Oreos if you want

How to Apply

  • Send in a resume to marcus@rethinkpriorities.org by the end of day March 25th, 2020.
  • With your resume, also send in a brief, one-page cover letter walking us through (1) why you would be a good fit for this role, (2) your reason for being interested in the role, and (3) your opinions on what is most important for an organization to run smoothly (please be as specific as possible and avoid merely citing platitudes). Lastly, feel free to send us any questions you may have.
  • Successful applicants based on this first stage will be contacted for the remainder of the application process, which includes spending three hours completing a test task and about 60mins each completing two interviews. That’s it!
  • We strongly encourage candidates of all different backgrounds and identities to apply to this role. Rethink Priorities is committed to building an inclusive and supportive community for you to be happy and do your best work.
  • For fairness and to increase the ability for all people to make time for our application process, all candidates who complete our test task will be compensated $100 for their time.
