Reports to: Managing Editor
Hours: Part-time (0–30 hours/week) on an on-call, project-specific basis; 1-year contract
Pay rate: $23/hour if hired as an employee; $25/hour if hired as an independent contractor; possibility of project-based pay if hired as an independent contractor
Location: Remote

Position summary
The Copy Editor is an extra-departmental staff member, reporting directly to the Managing Editor. They are primarily responsible for copy editing materials related to ACE’s annual charity evaluations. They may also copy edit other internal and external ACE-written content on an as-needed basis.

Key areas of responsibility

  • Copy edit ACE-written content on an on-call, project-specific basis
  • Copy edit for syntax, spelling, grammar, formatting, etc.
  • Copy edit web pages, blog posts, spreadsheets, and Guesstimate models
  • Ensure that all work is written in accordance with ACE’s style guide
  • Check that hyphens, capital letters, optional spellings, etc., are used consistently
  • Format in-text citations and footnotes in accordance with ACE’s style guide
  • Create reference lists in APA style for all major works on an on-call basis
  • Format and copy edit materials shared with ACE by charities under review
  • Produce high-quality summaries of conversations with charity leaders
  • Work from an automated transcript to draft, edit, and proofread conversation summaries for publication
  • Work closely with the Managing Editor, suggesting edits to improve structure, readability, conciseness, and style of text

Essential qualifications/skills

  • Excellent English editing, writing, and proofreading skills
  • Ability to edit in accordance with ACE’s style guide and voice
  • At least two years’ experience in copy editing
  • Knowledge of APA citation style
  • Highly organized
  • Capable of independently managing time and tasks associated with a fast-paced organization
  • Able to work effectively in a dynamic environment both independently and as part of a remote team
  • Flexible and able to multitask
  • Creative ability to rephrase sentences without changing their meaning
  • Capable of handling confidential information
  • Familiar with and committed to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion

Preferred qualifications/skills

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in English, journalism, communications, or related field
  • Committed to ACE’s mission and vision
  • Familiar with ACE’s work
  • Familiar with both the animal advocacy and effective altruism movements
  • At least two years’ experience in the field of animal advocacy

Through evaluating animal charities and researching interventions used to help animals, we aid compassionate givers, professionals, and volunteers in making informed decisions about how to help animals as effectively as possible. We provide career and volunteering recommendations and promote best practices for animal charities. We also award grants to academics and organizations to help them conduct their own research.
