Drive the narrative to support a healthy, sustainable and just food system

Industrial animal agriculture is at the root of many of the most pressing global issues of our time, from climate change and global hunger, to increased disease risk and poor animal welfare.

The Good Food Institute Europe (GFI Europe) is at the forefront of the movement to use food technology to replace the products of industrial animal agriculture with plant-based, fermentation-derived and cultivated alternatives. How You Will Make a Difference 

You will lead on planning and delivering impact across the entire spectrum of communications disciplines, including media and public relations, brand marketing, digital and social media, and the production of content and materials. Your ‘North Star’ will be to advance the alternative proteins sector across Europe, and to ensure that GFI Europe is the go-to thought leader within the sector. As our first communications hire in our growing team, you will be responsible for:

  • Developing and executing a strategic communications plan for GFI Europe.
  • Work closely with our Managing Director on developing and executing an impactful public relations programme, including writing and placing press releases, op-eds, articles and blogs, etc, to deliver and shape positive coverage for GFI Europe and the alternative proteins sector.
  • Developing a clear, impactful narrative and key messages, and delivering these across all communications channels.
  • Building relationships with journalists in the fields of science, academia, business, innovation, entrepreneurship, food/ag, and policy.
  • Acting as a spokesperson for GFI Europe when necessary.
  • Understanding, listening, and following the European conversation around alternative proteins to identify new opportunities to promote the sector and GFI Europe’s work in key European countries.
  • Identifying, building relationships with and influencing key organisations and opinion leaders across Europe to strengthen the narrative that supports the alternative protein sector.
  • Working with fundraising colleagues to develop and implement strategies for reaching, recruiting and stewarding supporters.
  • Collaborating with our policy team to ensure our political communication is effective and reaches the right audience.
  • Managing GFI Europe’s social media activity and potentially developing online tools such as a new website and webinars.
  • Coordinating with colleagues, and potentially external consultants, to oversee the production of GFI Europe publications and material including brochures, presentations and one-pagers, and act as our ‘brand guardian’ to ensure consistency.
  • Potentially working with and overseeing agencies, freelancers and others to help deliver the above.
  • Performing other tasks as required as a member of our small start-up team.

Who we’re looking for: 

You must have:

  • A passion for GFI’s philosophy and mission.
  • Significant (ideally 5 or more years) communications experience, for example in public relations, media relations, social media or journalism.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills, including the ability to write persuasive press releases and articles.
  • A passion for, and demonstrated success with, proactive media outreach, including effectively developing and pitching stories to journalists that resulted in positive coverage.
  • Good judgement and news-sense: to successfully spot opportunities and ‘hooks’ to secure coverage, and to get the substance, tone and nuance of our message right.
  • The ability to devise a well-informed strategy for GFI Europe’s comms work, in terms of audience mapping, channels, messaging.
  • Excellent people-skills: the ability to influence, network, build alliances and work well in a team.
  • A can-do approach: a self-starter with the drive and initiative to take responsibility for delivering communications impact.
  • Comfort working remotely in a rapidly-growing and evolving organization: the ability to work well independently and under pressure, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines.
  • Fluent English, both written and spoken. We would also welcome applications from candidates who, in addition, can work in other major European languages.

The Fine Print:

  • Terms of employment: Full-time, permanent
  • Location: Flexible – we will consider applicants from anywhere in Europe. You will mainly be working remotely: from your home, or wherever you choose. Once the COVID situation has cleared, you and the whole GFI Europe team will get together in-person approximately once every six weeks for around 3-4 days at a time, most likely in the London area or Brussels. There may also be other occasional work trips within Europe or to the US.
  • Salary: £38,000 – £44,000.  This range is based on a UK hire and will be adjusted if hired elsewhere in Europe.
