Uplands PEAK Sanctuary is Indiana’s first farmed animal sanctuary and was established in 2012. PEAK moved to a much larger property in 2017 with the vision of helping more animals in need through our rescue and education programs.

We are seeking a passionate team member who is committed to growing PEAK and their career in the sanctuary movement. Sanctuary work is dirty, physical, and emotionally taxing work that requires honesty, open communication, self-care, and teamwork. Pay is based on experience with farmed animal care and starts at $15/hr. Onsite housing (including utilities and internet) is available as part of the compensation package.

The Animal Sanctuary Manager Assistant is responsible for assisting with all aspects of animal care and guidelines in addition to working with the Sanctuary Manager.

Daily Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Inventory, order, and stock animal care supplies including prescription medications
  • Assist with training and managing seasonal interns and volunteers
  • Create staff schedule and coordinate time-off requests
  • Work with Volunteer Coordinator with identifying volunteer needs and new volunteer orientations
  • Work with Sanctuary Manager on Resident Enrichment Program
  • Transport animals to and from vet appointments
  • Ensure animal care treatment plans are followed as directed by vets and Sanctuary Manager
  • Assist Animal Care Team in providing feed, water, and medication to all sanctuary residents
  • Administer medications, injections, and supplements
  • Participate with monthly health care checks
  • Continuously research treatment and care best practices
  • Trim hooves, clean ears, brush, bath, and similar care
  • Participate in cleaning stalls, grounds, coops, crates, etc. as needed
  • Other administrative tasks and projects as needed


  • Associates Degree or Equivalent
  • Minimum of two years caring for farmed animals like cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, and goats, preferably in a sanctuary setting
  • Able to understand and precisely follow oral and written directions
  • Team Lead or Management Experience
  • Persistent and clear communicator
  • Demonstrated Assertiveness and follow-thru
  • Proven Team Player

  • Dedication to PEAK’s mission and vision as well as animal liberation
  • Extremely observant; able to notice and communicate subtle changes in animals’ appearance and behavior.
  • Flexible and adaptable in an ever-changing environment
  • Direct Communicator

Applicants must have a valid driver’s license, pass a criminal background check, and be willing to work long hours (at times) including weekends, some holidays, and possible overnights. Hourly pay is based on the level of experience caring for rescued farmed animals.

This position is eligible for on-site housing which includes: appliances, paid utilities, and Wi-Fi. One week of paid vacation time. Paid holidays.
