The Operations/General Manager oversees the smooth running of all cafe operations whilst leading the team by providing a shining example of inclusive and kind hospitality. The Ops Manager will be able to take the service of MOTHER to the next level whilst increasing customer satisfaction.   • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the cafe, working closely with the Head Chef to create inclusive, efficient and successful service.
  • Work with the Head Chef on production forecast plans.
  • Ensure that all FOH processes and procedures are documented in MOTHER’s Way (cafe manual) and that it is updated and followed when necessary.
  • Work regular Front of House shifts to understand the needs of the cafe & team.
  • Maximise sales and profitability through appropriate staffing, sales and customer service.
    Liaise with landlords HereEast and maintaining a positive and productive relationship.


  • Support the FOH Lead and Head Chef in managing team members.
  • Work with the FOH Lead and Head Chef to ensure that labour rates are attained and that the rota reflects seasonality and other demands.
  • Oversee and deliver induction and training for all team members including regular training on areas such as diversity and inclusion, sustainability and core values.
  • Design and monitor a team rewards + incentives programme.
  • Plan engaging team socials to support team cohesion and culture.
  • Communicate with the team through a regular internal newsletter.
  • Manage and issue contracts for new staff members.


  • Ensure that every customer has a positive experience with MOTHER.
  • Development of customer engagement tools.
  • Deal with email enquiries.
  • Respond to private event and catering enquiries and leading on events.


  • Produce budgets and forecasts for weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual periods.
  • Monitor and report on key metrics on the dashboard including sales against budget and forecast.
  • Work with the Head Chef to monitor and manage margins.
  • Report on key cafe insights such as pricing, visual displays, customer feedback, upselling opportunities, engagement with community, site cleanliness.
  • Work with the MOTHER Board on annual strategy and vision.
  • Act as a communication channel between the team and the MOTHER Board.


  • Lead on engagement with the community including charity initiatives + local partnerships.


  • Manage health and safety processes including HACCP.
  • Responsible for landlord compliance e.g. fire checks, grease trap maintenance etc.
  • Responsible for overseeing the maintenance and repair of any equipment.


The MOTHER Operations Manager will have:

  • Passion for and commitment to MOTHER’s vision and values including equal opportunities, intersectionality and anti-racism.
  • At least one year of experience working in a leadership role within hospitality.
  • Level 2 Food Hygiene certificate and solid understanding of health and safety in a cafe environment.
  • Excellent organisational skills, attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Negotiation and resolution management skills.
  • Excellent people skills including the ability to support a team.
  • Good grasp of written and spoken English.
  • Good numeracy skills for stock checks and orders.
  • Ample technological skills to use apps and spreadsheets.
  • Right to work in the UK.
