• Reports To: ACE board of directors
  • Hours: Full-time (40 hours/week); must be routinely available from 8–10 am Pacific Time.
  • Salary: We expect to offer compensation of $94,617+ depending on qualifications (based on ACE’s compensation formula)*
  • Location: Remote; We can directly employ candidates in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. If the right applicant is not within those jurisdictions, we will explore a third-party employment solution.
  • Paid leave (vacations and holidays): 30 days per year

Position summary

The Executive Director (ED) is responsible for ensuring that ACE’s strategic plan is set and implemented in line with our mission.

Key areas of responsibility

Communications Strategy, Planning, and Management

The ED’s job duties and responsibilities are assessed in annual evaluations administered by ACE’s board, incorporating feedback from staff members, board members, and important external stakeholders.

Strategic Planning

  • Set ACE’s 3-year strategic plan, in collaboration with staff and board members and in line with ACE’s mission
    • Familiarize the team with the plan, so that all staff and board members are aware of our big-picture goals and adhere to them when executing programs
    • Review the strategic plan annually with all staff during the prospective goal-setting phase
  • Set ACE’s annual prospective goals, in collaboration with staff and board members
    • Assess programs annually to seek out opportunities for increasing impact, including adding, removing, or modifying particular initiatives to better fit within the 3-year strategic plan.
    • Conduct quarterly check-ins with leadership staff to track progress on annual goals and reprioritize them as necessary.
  • Develop and implement processes for assessing ACE’s impact
    • Make programmatic changes to maximize ACE’s impact with regard to our mission

Management and Governance

  • Meet with the board every eight weeks to discuss the state of the organization and ensure the observance of ACE’s mission and vision
    • Facilitate communications between the board and staff, providing a mechanism for feedback between both groups
    • Create board meeting agendas, co-lead board meetings, and compile reports as needed
    • Proactively engage the board with fundraising and other organizational work
  • Oversee direct reports
    • Support the development of staff members’ relevant skills and experience
    • Conduct annual staff evaluations for direct reports, including creating goals and identifying opportunities for further growth
    • Hold weekly 1-on-1 meetings with direct reports
  • Review annual charity evaluations and provide guidance on official recommendations
  • Review annual Movement Grants and provide guidance on grantee selection


  • Hire and retain high-quality staff
  • Create an annual budget in collaboration with leadership staff and the board
    • Update the staff compensation model annually
    • Review the budget quarterly to ensure the proper use of funds throughout the yea
  • Ensure financial solvency in times of crisis and adapt organizational programs in accordance with world events


  • Work with the Philanthropy team to develop and maintain strong relationships with ACE’s key stakeholders, including donors


  • Engage in public speaking, attend relevant conferences, and network with external stakeholders (especially in the animal advocacy and effective altruism communities)
  • Ensure that ACE’s brand remains consistent across external communications with advocates, charities, and donors


Essential qualifications/skills**

  • Commitment to ACE’s mission, which is to find and promote the most effective ways to help the largest number of animals
  • Two or more years of management-related professional experience
  • Strong critical and strategic thinking skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and confidence when networking with key stakeholders
  • Some experience with the animal advocacy movement
  • Some experience with the effective altruism movement
  • Openness to topics and efforts that are outside the mainstream animal advocacy movement
  • Shared commitment to increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion in our movement and organization; commitment to actively integrate justice and equity into ACE’s work
  • High degree of professionalism, including discretion when handling confidential information
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with many different parties
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to high-quality work
  • Commitment to transparency and integrity
  • Highly organized and self-motivated
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple tasks

Preferred qualifications/skills

  • Professional experience in animal advocacy, program evaluation, or a closely-related field
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a remote team
  • Deep understanding of social movements and social change
  • Deep understanding of social psychology, economics, program evaluation, or other relevant fields
  • Extensive public speaking experience and strong public speaking skills
  • Strong familiarity with the animal advocacy movement
  • Strong familiarity with the effective altruism movement

*Please note that while we expect to offer this initial compensation, annually updating the compensation formula used across the organization is a responsibility of the Executive Director. This is the compensation range for the Executive Director position given the current formula. ACE’s salaries have increased significantly in recent years and there is a possibility for further notable changes. We strongly encourage applicants who are interested in this position but seek a higher rate of compensation to still express interest and/or apply.
