Overview

About this role: Animal Place is seeking a Community Engagement Coordinator to join our fun, passionate team to advance our mission to provide refuge for unwanted farmed animals, to further their welfare through education of the public, and to foster ethics of compassion and responsibility towards nonhuman animals by advocating a vegan lifestyle. This position will be responsible for overseeing and developing all aspects of Animal Place’s volunteer program and expanding our community outreach efforts. The perfect candidate should possess a deep passion for animal rights and veganism, alongside the ability to excel in interpersonal interactions and relationship building.

About us: Founded in 1989, Animal Place is one of the oldest and largest sanctuaries for farmed animals in the United States. As an animal rights organization, we promote the complete protection of farmed animals and a vegan lifestyle. There are two facilities: a 600-acre sanctuary in Grass Valley, CA, that serves as a permanent safe haven for farmed animals and a 12-acre Rescue & Adoption facility in Petaluma, CA. Job Status: Full-time employee (40 hours per week). Hybrid schedule negotiable after 3-month probation period.

Supervision: Reports to the Program Director

Salary: $21/hr, evaluated after 3-month probation period

Benefits: Health insurance after 90-day employment, 403b (Animal Place matches 3% after one year), vacation, holiday, sick time package, monthly commuting stipend.

Responsibilities and Duties:

Community Outreach

  • Maintain a calendar of outreach activities, including community events, workshops, appearances, and other community opportunities.
  • Cultivate positive relationships with various people, including residents, community leaders, local groups, and organizations.

Tours

  • Lead guided public and private tours of the sanctuary.

Events

  • Assist our Events Manager with planning and executing events.
  • Coordinate volunteers on the day of events.

Volunteer Recruitment and Outreach

  • Develop and implement effective strategies to recruit volunteers.
  • Write job descriptions for different volunteer positions.

Volunteer Onboarding and Training

  • Lead orientations, tours, and other training opportunities
  • Match volunteers with mentors
  • Train on job-specific tasks
  • Increase volunteers’ understanding of Animal Place, its mission, and the roles and responsibilities of volunteers.

Volunteer Management

  • Schedule for all volunteer needs across Animal Place’s programs and facilities, including coordinating volunteers for events and work gatherings.
  • Work closely with the animal care department to ensure volunteers are current on the latest protocols.
  • Retain volunteer forms and records.
  • Document volunteer activities.
  • Handle problems that may arise among staff and volunteers.

Volunteer Communication and Engagement

  • Write and distribute a quarterly volunteer newsletter and ongoing communications using scheduling software and e-marketing tools.
  • Plan and implement volunteer recognition activities.
  • Promote and strengthen community among volunteers and staff.
  • Oversee Volunteer Facebook group.

Volunteer Program Planning and Evaluation

  • Conduct an annual volunteer program evaluation survey.
  • Plan new volunteer programs.
  • Evaluate existing programs.
  • Collect volunteer and staff feedback.
  • Redesign programs based on needs and resources.
  • Prepare quarterly and annual program reports.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Assist in special projects or assignments as required

Qualifications:

  • Strong interest in and commitment to animal rights and veganism
  • Personable and friendly
  • Extremely well organized: set priorities, develop a work schedule, monitor progress toward goals, and track details, data, and activities.
  • Relationship builder: Establish and maintain positive working relationships with others internally and externally to achieve organizational goals.
  • Experience supervising/managing employees or volunteers is strongly preferred.
  • Problem solver: Assess problem situations and resolve issues.
  • Creativity/innovation: Develop new and unique ways to improve the program.
  • Self-starter: can work independently while creating and implementing new initiatives
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to professionally advocate Animal Place’s positions on issues.
  • Previous volunteer or paid work in animal protection is preferred.
  • Knowledge of farmed animal issues is preferred.
  • Experience in navigating different social media platforms is preferred.
  • Valid Driver’s License and good driving record
