Balanced, a 501(c)3 non-profit focused on nutrition and public health advocacy, is seeking a Director of Development to lead its fundraising efforts in 2019 and beyond. A first of its kind organization, Balanced works to hold food companies accountable and organize advocates and allies across the country to campaign for healthier foods in schools, universities, and hospitals.
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Development is responsible for the overall strategic and operational execution for all of Balanced’s vital revenue streams. The Director of Development will plan and organize fundraising activities, manage the development budget and empower all stakeholders to raise funds in support of current programmatic priorities and future initiatives.
As our designer of development strategies, you get to
- Help our donors accomplish their philanthropic goals and ambitions through a relationship with our organization
- Develop and execute the annual fundraising plan
- Generate new ideas that increase revenue and donor loyalty
- Report on program progress to the Executive Director and the board
- Oversee the development budget and monitor expenses
As our organizer of development activities, you get to
- Maintain long-term relationships with existing donors
- Identify and build relationships with new and prospective donors
- Manage systems and software to track and cultivate donors and prospects, including our donor database and wealth screening tools
- Administer signature fundraising and donor stewardship events
- Make direct, face-to-face solicitations
- Recruit, train, and support key volunteers to assist in advancement efforts
- Communicate fundraising goals throughout the organization and equip team members to reach them

You have experience in nonprofit development; the ideal candidate will have experience helping early-stage nonprofits grow into powerhouse organizations. You dream of helping create a food system that makes public health a priority and you’re unafraid to boldly advocate for change. You are an enthusiastic leader capable of managing diverse relationships and organizing others to reach a common goal. Initiating and completing projects is right up your alley. You know how to make timely, effective and ethical decisions. You embody the entrepreneurial spirit. You’re a courageous self-starter who crafts creative solutions and opens doors to new donor relationships. You actively and constantly listen to all constituents, focus especially on donor needs and know how to identify mutual benefits. You communicate excellently and compel audiences through writing and speaking.
The Director of Development must excel at building relationships and be a compelling storyteller. This person is someone who proactively seeks opportunities to share Balanced’s story with new audiences and thrives on building networks across multiple, diverse industries such as nutrition and lifestyle medicine, public health, animal welfare, and food justice. This person must be highly strategic, innovative, and have demonstrated leadership abilities and a track record of getting results. Familiarity and comfort with digital technologies are necessary. Previous experience in public health and/or nutrition-related organizations is a plus.
