Job Title: Animal Sanctuary Assistant

Reports To: The Animal Sanctuary Manager

Job Overview: As an Animal Sanctuary Assistant, you will carry out the daily animal chores and jobs also relating to the volunteer experience programme

Salary: The position is voluntary, however basic accommodation, food (vegan), utilities and work equipment are provided

Date from: March 2020

Date to: You must be able to commit to at least 2 months but if both parties are satisfied, the position will be ongoing (with out of season holidays permitted)

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Undertake animal-related tasks such as: dog walking, feeding and watering animals, cleaning animal enclosures, animal enclosure maintenance and cleaning of animal laundry
  • Observe animals for signs of injury or illness
  • Carry out daily animal checks
  • Undertake volunteer experience-related tasks such as: collecting volunteers from/dropping volunteers to airport/city, cleaning tents and communal areas including laundry, carrying out sanctuary tasks with volunteers, taking volunteers on excursions,  grocery shopping, cooking for volunteers (occasionally), socialising and communicating with volunteers and organising occasional evening entertainment
  • Observe volunteers to ensure tasks are carried out properly and in line with health and safety rules
  • Work closely with the Animal Sanctuary Manager to carry out tasks predetermined by them
  • Assist vets and farriers with animal visits
  • Take animals to vets when necessary
  • Follow health and safety procedures put in place by the Animal Sanctuary Manager

Qualifications and desired traits:

  • Experience with animal care
  • Excellent animal observation skills with animal behaviour knowledge (however,  this can be learnt)
  • Ability to manage other people
  • Customer service experience (you should strive to provide a 5 star customer experience)
  • Excellent self-motivator and organised
  • Positive, upbeat attitude and loads of energy
  • Physically fit and able to work difficult, long hours and in all weathers (it gets extremely hot and we have some severe storms too)
  • Excellent communicator (you must be able to communicate with the volunteers clearly, check how they are getting on and if they need anything etc )
  • People person (you are surrounded by people all day, every day so you must love meeting new people and be comfortable initiating conversation)
  • Full driver’s license (preferred)
  • Life saving credentials (preferred but not necessary)
  • Spanish speaker (preferred but not necessary)
  • Compassionate, selfless and ability to empathise

About Jacobs Ridge

Jacobs Ridge is an animal sanctuary operating in the Murcia region of Spain and is owned and operated by British couple: Julian Nicholson and Rachael Wheeler.
The sanctuary is mostly funded by the volunteer experience break it offers which allows people to come and help out and get close to some of the 170 rescue animals whilst enjoying the sun, nature, local excursions and 100% vegan food.
