The Leadership Academy, which runs from June 25 to August 15, is an immersive, educational fellowship in sustainable food systems leadership for high school and college students. Over these eight weeks, fellows delve into the complexities of industrial animal agriculture and actively contribute to developing solutions.

“With the help of New Roots staff, partner organizations, and fellows, I am creating change that I never could have imagined before this summer! I have learned so many new skills and gained access to important resources.”

– Lilly Smith, Summer 2023

You’ll learn from thought leaders in each subject area, including:

  • Organizing & Campaigning: Hear firsthand how students like you are building a people-powered plant-based global movement — and how you can bring this movement to your campus and community.
  • Policy & Law: Learn how civic engagement and the legislative process can be leveraged to create a more just and sustainable food system.
  • Media Arts & Journalism: Discover the power of storytelling to influence public opinion and create real-world impact.
  • Health & Wellness: Understand the harms factory farming inflicts upon human well-being, and how to build healthier communities.
  • Innovation & Entrepreneurship: Explore how technology and business can come together to build momentum to support the end of factory farming.

Three days per week, you’ll have four hours of comprehensive programming, consisting of:

  • Interactive Lecture: Deepen your understanding of the problems and existing efforts to address them through conversation with thought leaders and subject matter experts
  • Guided Discussion: Broaden your perspective and cultivate systems thinking as you begin to draw connections through dialogue with your peers
  • Community Forum: Explore new interests and insights as we come together and share what inspires and motivates us
  • Leadership Lab: Strengthen your leadership identity and develop critical competencies for making a meaningful impact

Fellows can expect to devote approximately 15 hours per week to the Leadership Academy.
