Facilities and Maintenance Crew
Job Summary:
Odd Man Inn’s Facilities & Maintenance position is responsible for providing regular upkeep and maintenance of all of OMI’s facilities, grounds, and equipment at its headquarters in Jamestown, TN. Under the guidance of the Facility Manager, this position performs regular maintenance tasks and facility upgrades, coordinates and schedules such activities according to quarterly and annual timetables, consults with other staff as necessary, works with external contractors as necessary, and maintains detailed records for all related activities.
This Facilities & Maintenance position is a crucial member of the Animal Care Department at OMI. Their daily contributions ensure our sanctuary residents and staff have a safe and comfortable environment, and their work is critical in supporting the organization’s mission.

Work Schedule:
40 hours/week including some weekends, holidays, and evenings.
Pay:
$18.00 – $22.00 per hour

Responsibilities:
- Maintain the organization’s buildings and animal housing, including basic repairs, painting, cleaning, etc.
- Organize and clean shop tools and spaces and maintain a current inventory of supplies.
- Ensure vehicles and other equipment are clean, safe, and in good repair.
- Maintain grounds (mowing, weed whacking, and weeding service roads, walking paths,etc)
- Conduct off-site errands to home improvement stores, dumps, hazardous waste facilities, etc.
- Work with outside contractor services, including deliveries, fencing, tree services, mowing, pest control, etc.
- Perform grounds, equipment, and facility maintenance in the sanctuary as needed, including fencing repairs, snow/ice removal, cleaning, minor carpentry and construction projects, moving gravel with equipment, basic plumbing, electrical, and general contracting (as possible and appropriate).
- Maintain a safe environment and participate in Safety Committee meetings.
- Assist caregivers in cleaning and maintaining animal enclosures, including removing animal excrement and food remnants, scrubbing water buckets and tubs, and changing straw bedding as needed
- Assist caregivers with moving and storing hay and feed when it is delivered.
- Assist caregivers with loading and unloading of large animals for transport in trailers.
- Support OMI’s team to ensure that cleanliness standards are maintained throughout the sanctuary.
- Follow all established sanctuary protocols for safety, disease control, and drug/equipment, as well as policies that reflect best practices. Take immediate action to address any safety concerns that could put a staff member, volunteer, guest, animal, or the organization at risk.
- Participate in staff meetings and discussions as needed and contribute any unique perspectives or opinions on issues related to our mission.
- Ensure and model excellent customer service to guests, volunteers, and fellow staff, while promoting our mission and values as a sanctuary.
- Practice and encourage the compassionate humane treatment of all animals.
- Assist with winter maintenance for water lines, vehicles, and small engine equipment
- Build structures for enclosure improvements, including construction of awnings, installation of windows and insulation, and roof maintenance.
- Inspect and maintain facility structures, tools, equipment, emergency supplies, fire extinguishers, perimeter fence, enclosure fences, perimeter fences, and gates.
- Check fluids in all vehicles. Take vehicles to the mechanic for repairs. Clean vehicles as needed.
- Repair and replace fencing and gates, as needed.
- Clear gutters and maintain pens, as needed.
- Lead and mentor volunteers through facilities activities.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis and occasionally lift up to 150 lbs with an assistant (loading animals in crates)
- Ability to stand for long periods, frequently bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, push, pull, climb, and balance.
- Physical stamina to work outdoors for long periods and under inclement weather.
- Ability to perform duties in an outdoor environment with exposure to animals, bedding materials (straw), and native wildlife for prolonged periods of time.
Qualifications:
- Must meet physical requirements.
- Commitment to the mission, values, goals, and success of OMI, recognition that each animal is an individual whose quality-of-life matters (whether in a sanctuary or the wild), and a willingness to accommodate animal needs in a way that reflects our values as an animal sanctuary.
- Highly motivated and able to work flexible hours (including weekends and holidays).
- Team player willing to maintain a positive and collaborative environment.
- Experience working with power tools/equipment (hedge trimmer, weed whacker, chainsaw, driving mower).
- Experience with tractors, skid steers, excavators, and farm equipment is preferred
- Proficiency in basic computer applications, such as word processing, spreadsheets, file management, shared drives, and internet usage is preferred.
- Maintain a TN State driver’s license. Must have a clean driving record.
- Must pass a background check.
- Maintain current CPR/AED and first aid certification. Training can be provided.
Compensation and Benefits:
This is a great opportunity to join a dynamic and committed team in a professional animal sanctuary environment. In addition to being a full-time position with a salary range of $18.00-$20.00 per hour (dependent on experience), benefits include generous paid time off, and group health insurance.
