About the Research and Regulatory Affairs Department

The Research and Regulatory Affairs Department conducts a variety of campaigns and collaborative efforts to make medical education, basic research, and product testing more human-focused and compassionate. Building on our milestone achievements like ending the use of animals in medical student training and passing federal legislation to drastically reduce the use of animals in chemical testing, our scientists and policy experts work to stop animal experiments and redirect funding toward effective nonanimal methods. We work with scientists, the public, journalists, lawmakers, and celebrities to raise awareness about the pitfalls of animal research and testing and about the value of human-relevant methods.

About this Career Opportunity

Essential functions:

  • Contribute to idea generation and strategy development for medical research advocacy projects
  • Work with department colleagues to author blog posts, articles, op-eds, action alerts, and other relevant documents promoting replacement of animals in medical research and toxicology.
  • Professionally and clearly represent programs to the Physicians Committee’s membership and the public
  • Help identify papers in scientific journals that are scientifically and ethically problematic
  • Conduct research and information-gathering via the Internet, telephone, freedom of information laws, scientific and medical journals, and other mediums
  • Draft correspondence to journal editors, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees, and others
  • Develop strategies for encouraging scientific journals to reduce publication of studies involving animals
  • Prepare supporting materials, including journal articles, white papers, and Web content
  • Co-author papers for publication in scientific journals
  • Collaborate on data analysis
  • Collaborate on strategy development
  • Lobby legislators as needed

This is a full-time position that can be done remotely from anywhere within the U.S. but may periodically require some work to be performed at our headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Who We’re Looking For

The ideal candidate for this position will have experience analyzing scientific literature and an understanding of the scientific and ethical limitations of animal experiments and be passionate about the Physicians Committee’s mission to end animal experiments. Additional qualifications include:

  • Experience reading and interpreting peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts
  • Comfort working with databases
  • Being organized and able to conduct multiple tasks efficiently and proactively with an eye for detail and a firm grasp of deadlines
  • Being an open and clear communicator
  • Possessing strong writing skills with the ability to write persuasively, clearly, and succinctly
