Overview

Sweet Peeps Microsanctuary is a loving, safe, home for chickens rescued from animal agriculture. Most of our residents were rescued from industrial animal agriculture and are Cornish Crosses, aka “broilers”, the main breed used by the meat industry. A smaller number of our residents are victims of the backyard chicken industry. We are also home to 20 cats (some feral some domesticated) and 1 very sweet dog, all rescues.

We are located in Lillian, AL, which is about 30 minutes from downtown Pensacola, FL, about 25 minutes from the Gulf of Mexico and an hour from downtown Mobile.

We are looking for a part-time animal caretaker and overall assistant to help primarily with cleaning the chickens’ living spaces, and helping with all aspects of their care, including feeding, and medicating, as well as helping with some of the cat care, including feeding, and scooping litter boxes. Broadly, the job involves all aspects of maintaining the sanctuary facilities and caring for the animals here.

HOURS: Monday- Friday, 5 hours a day (changes some with the seasons but 11-4, or 12-5 is the normal schedule) plus additional hours on as as needed basis including monthly or bi-monthly overnight stays.

COMPENSATION: There is a three bedroom guest house on a 2 1/2 acre lot adjacent to the sanctuary. We are ideally looking for a caregiver to live in-residence at the guest house with room and board provided in exchange for the regular 25 hrs per week. All additional hours (varies but would likely average an extra 10-15 hours a month plus at least one overnight) would be paid at $15/hr. Overnight stays would be paid on a daily rate.

REQUIREMENTS:
Caregiver must be vegan and have experience working with animals in a compassionate setting. Ideal candidate will have experience working at an animal sanctuary and/or will have vet tech experience and have experience specifically with chickens.

Caregiver must be reliable, dependable, compassionate, resourceful, mindful, conscientious, have reliable transportation, and be willing to run errands for the sanctuary. Caregiver must also be physically fit, able to lift 50 pounds (that’s what our feedbags weigh), and must be able to work in all kinds of weather including our hot and humid summers.

This is a physically demanding and extremely rewarding job. The sanctuary is a space of collective liberation, where all beings are treated with the respect and kindness we all want and deserve. Chickens are the most abused land animal on earth. Here, we provide them the safe space, respect, and loving care they all deserve. We aim to create the conditions for them to live the best lives possible and be a model for a future society based on compassion and reverence for life.

If interested, please email us a letter of interest and a resume, or feel free to reach out via email with any questions.
