Summary of Organization: Uplands PEAK is Indiana’s first farmed animal sanctuary whose mission is to rescue and rehabilitate abused and neglected farmed animals, educate the public to the benefits of a healthy vegan lifestyle, and promote sustainability.  PEAK is a 501c3 organization.

Supervision: Reports to Executive Director

Job Description: The Animal Care Manager supervises animal caregivers, interns and volunteers – this includes approving weekly schedules, creating task lists and conducting training. The Animal Care manager oversees all animal care processes: daily feeding, water refilling, cleaning, health checks, etc. They coordinate on and offsite veterinary care for the animals and maintain animal care schedules, records, and history. They adjust, update and ensure treatment plans and diets are followed. The Animal Care Manager will develop and execute ongoing training programs for the Animal Care Team. They assist in the care of the animal residents living at the sanctuary.

Job Responsibilities and Duties

Supervise and train Animal Caregivers, interns and animal care volunteers
Maintain animal feeding schedules
Implement diet/nutrition plans for animals based on individuals, seasons, species, etc.
Manage regular animal health checks (daily, weekly, monthly)
Maintain treatment history and records
Administer medications including injections
Schedule veterinary visits, coordinate transport, and set-up treatment protocols
Approve animal care staff schedule, time cards, and time-off requests
Lead and make crucial decisions in animal care emergencies
Assist as necessary with cleaning, feeding, providing water, medicating and maintaining animal habitats, shelters and other areas
Maintain neat and organized work and storage spaces
Meet with Executive Director weekly
Manage intake, quarantine and treatment of new rescues
Work with Animal Care Team to adapt and document enrichment program for each species


3 years of animal care experience
2 years of veterinary assistant experience
Supervisory and leadership experience
Excellent animal behavior and observation skills
Organized and detail oriented
Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including cold/wet/muddy weather and hot humid summers
Able to lift 40 – 50 pounds and perform strenuous/manual labor
Follows oral and written instructions
Able to learn and process new information quickly
Adaptable in a  constantly changing environment
Prioritizes tasks in a busy environment
Team player and self-motivator, reliable and dependable
Committed to Uplands PEAK Sanctuary’s mission
Willing to work on weekend/holidays/varying shift times
Valid driver’s license and good driving record (subject to verification)
Keen interest in the animal welfare/rights movement is encouraged
Vegan lifestyle

Hours/Days: 40 hours/week; days and shifts vary depending on sanctuary activities, required to work some holidays, and possible overnight in emergency situations

Compensation:  Starting at $16hr
